Eurecat is the Technology Centre of Catalonia. Providing the industrial and business sector with differential technology and advanced expertise, it offers solutions to their innovation needs and boosts their competitiveness in a fast-paced environment. The range of services offered by the centre are primarily focused on: applied R&D, technological services, information technology consulting, highly specialized training, product and service development, and promotion and distribution of technological innovation.

Eurecat aims its services at all business sectors but especially at seven key strategic areas of RIS3Cat: Food, Energy and Resources, Industrial Systems, Design-based Industries, Industries related to sustainable mobility, Health Industries and cultural, experience-based industries.

Eurecat is the result of the integration of the most important technology centres from the TECNIO network. Combines the experience of over 450 professionals, generating an annual income of €38M.

The new centre serves over a thousand businesses, participates in over 100 national and international R&D&i high level strategic projects, and has 36 international patents and 9 technology-based companies. It is made up of eight centres in Catalonia and one more in Latin America (Brazil).

 

Project role:

Eurecat will perform research in the areas of context analysis and sentiment extraction, as well as in social network analysis, focusing on opinion mining and information propagation.

People involved:

Ioannis Arapakis is a senior scientist at Eurecat and is a member of the Web Retrieval research group. He has worked in several European research project under the Seventh Framework Program (e.g., MIAUCE) and has published papers in prestigious conference venues and journals, such as SIGIR, ACM MM, CIKM, and IP&M. Currently, his research is focusing on the analysis and modelling of user engagement in social media interactions and multimedia access, with the help of appropriate sensors, data mining techniques and machine learning algorithms. His research interests also include affective & cognitive information retrieval, relevance feedback, multi-modal human-computer interaction, neuro-physiological signal processing, and machine analysis of human behaviour.
Francesco Bonchi is a senior research scientist at Eurecat, where he is the leader of the Web Mining research group. His current research interests include mining query-logs, social networks, as well as the privacy issues related to mining these kinds of sensible data. In the past he has been interested in data mining query languages, constrained pattern mining and privacy preserving data mining. He is member of the ECML PKDD Steering Committee, Yahoo Labs ambassador for academic relations with Italy, and the organiser of the Yahoo Labs Barcelona Seminars series. He has been program co-chair of the European Conference on Machine Learning and Principles and Practice of Knowledge Discovery in Databases (ECML PKDD 2010). He is co-editor of the book “Privacy-Aware Knowledge Discovery: Novel Applications and New Techniques” published by Chapman & Hall/CRC Press.
