Prof Burton will lead the LJMU-GERI team in the delivery of 3D data acquisition. He obtained a degree in Mechanical Engineering (BSc Hons) in 1980 and a PhD in the field of optical instrumentation in 1986. He joined L JMU in 1987 as a lecturer, was appointed a Reader (Associate Professor) in 1989 and to full Professorship in 1995. He was Director of the School of Engineering at LJMU from 1997 to 2002, at which point in time he founded the General Engineering Research Institute (GERI) and became its first – and present – Director.
Prof Burton has published over 110 papers in learned journals, mainly in the field of optical measurement, specialising in 3D surface measurement via structured light techniques. He has
successfully supervised 42 PhD students to successful completion.
Prof Burton has considerable expertise in managing large national and multi-national projects. He has been a lead/co-ordinator on three European projects (INFOCUS (BMH4950567), ARROW
(BMH4983660), ECSON (EP/F013698/1)) and current heads a major UK national project of £1.6M
(approximately 2MEuro, ERDF: X02633PR) as well as a number of smaller projects.
He is and has been a member of various co-ordinating and steering committees, including the Pistoia
Group, several conferences, the Grants Committee of the Academy of Sciences of Finland and a
consultant to the Government of the Republic of Ireland
