Workshop
Knowledge in Multimedia Content
November 22, 2006, 11:00-12:30 in Room 206,
Motivation
There is
a growing demand for efficient methods for retrieving semantic information and
extracting knowledge from multimedia content, since these are key enabling
factors for its management and usability. The integration of knowledge
technologies in such methods has been identified as one of the most promising
approaches to efficiently address these issues. As a result, there is a growing
community of researchers investigating the convergence of multimedia and
knowledge technologies, and a number of European collaborative and nationally
funded and industrial projects in this area. New scientific conferences are
emerging to disseminate this integrative research and new activities are
starting in both multimedia and Semantic Web related standardization bodies,
attracting a growing industrial interest.
Integration
of multimedia and Semantic Web technologies for describing, extracting and
retrieving semantic information from multimedia content enables or enhances a
number of applications and services both for commercial users (e.g., automatic
and semi- automatic annotation, authoring, indexing, retrieval, monitoring) and
end users (e.g., collaborative filtering, sharing, personalised adaptation,
syndication, and delivery).
Goals
The aim
of the workshop is to present and draw appropriate strands of work from the
multimedia and knowledge domains, which can serve as a reference for
researchers and collaborations going forward. The workshop will provide an
overview of current research/state of the art in the area of multimedia and
knowledge technologies covering various topics with speakers coming both from
industry and academia and representing a number of EC funded projects. Based on
these presentations and the outcome of the discussion, relevant networking
sessions can delineate new research challenges and new forms of partnership
under FP7.
Expected benefits
Semantic
Web community participants are expected to benefit from the workshop, by
researchers sharing information about how multimedia content and annotation can
be used by Semantic Web applications, in order to increase the value of the
Semantic Web. Multimedia community participants will benefit from learning how Semantic
Web technologies can be used to increase the value of multimedia assets such as
using ontologies and reasoning to assist with multimedia analysis and
annotation, or identification means to facilitate content location and sharing.
Format
After a
short introduction, the workshop will include a number of talks from academic
and industrial participants. An open discussion will follow, leading to related
research directions in FP7. The total duration of the workshop is 180 minutes.
